Define and Frame Your Design Challenge by Creating Your Point Of View and Ask How Might We IxDF

Pete Choquette, founder and principal of real estate development firm Solsbury Hill and sister design firm Centripetal Works, won the Solar Decathlon 2024 Alumni Award. Choquette was on the winning Georgia Institute of Technology team in the 2022 Design Challenge. Since graduating from Georgia Tech, he has continued to work as a liaison between the university’s faculty and students, the university’s Energy Policy and Innovation Center, and West Side Atlanta neighborhood stakeholders to implement the project. Additionally, he is assisting in the effort to create a community design center that would provide design and building science-related services to these underserved communities and scale up his Solar Decathlon team’s innovative and replicable project model. Created by artist Jake Parker, Inktober is a challenge that allows artists to see how much they can improve in a month.

However, it’s a fair trade-off if it’s some kind of reward for adopting a healthy habit such as drinking water, as opposed to a relatively pointless habit such as completing vanity engagement tasks on an app or website. You might describe positive but not necessarily healthy habits such as using a learning app as either ethical or unethical depending on the frequency of the rewards. So it’s clear that gamification isn’t necessarily a good thing (at least not anymore), and might be a positive framing of what actually boils down to dark patterns a lot of the time. It might be best to stop referring to gamification holistically and instead refer to the individual qualities of gamified products and the context in which they’re used. Addictive digital products also tend to have some kind of reward mechanism to keep users engaged.

Refining your craft isn’t about reading more articles — it’s about getting more reps in. When designers ask me how to practice outside of work, Sharpen.design is the first place I send them. Allows for content and ad personalization across Google services based on user behavior. Permits storing data to personalize content and ads across Google services based on user behavior, enhancing overall user experience. Design Thinking helps us focus on what kind of userswe’re dealing with, their needs we're trying to address in our design challenge, and then understand whether we're actually addressing those needs well enough. This design challenge framing is in stark contrast to the business models for linear problem solving, which rationally attempt to define everything upfront, and then etch away at achieving the set solution systematically.

They measure out each flavor using graduated cylinders until their concoction totals 1,000 ml. Each student samples the other new flavors using a paper cup, then ranks them. Unlike many office jobs, when you work in design, you can’t just keep pushing on if you’re not feeling creatively inspired. I give students the target of an orange bucket (representing the planet Mars) placed on the roof of our school to encourage maximum height and accuracy with their rockets. Each group gets six Alka-Seltzer tablets, a film canister, and a container of water. They are encouraged to try different amounts of water and Alka-Seltzer until they achieve maximum height. Encouraging upper elementary and middle school students to collaborate in solving a problem helps cement science learning. Our Inspiration for UI Challenge

One significant challenge that involves slight randomization is designing music album covers using randomized elements. Still, it uses a random Wikipedia page for the artist’s name, a random Wikiquote for the album’s name, and a random image on Flickr. The randomness of the activity rewards innovative ideas and thinking and results in an exciting challenge.

If you neglect to define your POV, you may end up getting lost in the ideation processes and in your prototyping process. It’s all too easy to end up focusing on you and your company’s own needs, trying to fulfill your and your company’s own dreams, not to mention the risk of getting lost in creating amazing buttons in the beautiful colours. Sharpen is a design education resource with a beautiful generator for branding design challenges.

Funnily enough, Inktober has something for everyone, be it designers, illustrators, artists, or even writers (read the FAQs). The prompts are released on September 1st every year, and you can start uploading your work from October 1st. The best thing about this challenge is that there is no right or wrong way of doing it.

Jumpstart your ideas with Linearity Curve

In addition to a community-based virtual power plant, Green Alley Housing proposes a wide array of net-zero design elements, from a gray water recovery system for irrigation, to the inclusion of electric-vehicle charging. A backyard view of a duplex co-op solution features a shared green space. "These winners offer a really comprehensive set of ideas and solutions for new housing options," says Hawthorne, "rather than design experimentation for its own sake." "The wide-ranging expertise on the jury—and the requirement that all entrants watch the community-engagement listening sessions—has produced results that are noticeably different from a typical design competition, which was very much our hope," says Hawthorne.

Out of fear of embarrassment or intervention, they might lie about how much time/money they’re spending on/with digital products, time and money of which they might not have. Outdoor space wraps around the units, each of which features an "upside down" layout that places the living areas on the upper level for better access to daylight and ventilation. In addition to private outdoor areas, the designers have also carved out space for a communal area and a street-facing community park. Although the Low-Rise contest was established in kind, it takes its cues more specifically from the Case Study Houses program, a midcentury initiative to commission inexpensive architectural designs from greats like Richard Neutra, Eero Saarinen, and the Eamses. Unlike the Case Study Houses, however, the winning Low-Rise proposals have been evaluated on a wider set of criteria beyond aesthetics and affordability.

Reimagine the design of a 21st century classroom that can make your classroom a model for learning today and beyond. Sharpen Design’s site is something every designer needs in their toolkit. You can choose the briefs based on categories, from branding to marketing to UX. Each mock brief is short and sweet without any unnecessary details and fluff. Learning a new skill is never easy, especially if you don’t know how to train properly.

The theme of the Minnesota 4-H Engineering Design Challenge for 2024 asks teams to consider "Engineering for a Changing Climate." UT’s team submitted a circular shaft Halligan bar, and retained the hexagonal bar used by the Knoxville firefighters during testing as backup entry option. Designed by and named for New York City Fire Department First Deputy Chie Hugh Halligan in 1948, the Halligan bar consists of a bar with a claw or fork, a blade, and a tapered pick. Kolby Bull, Zoe Campbell, Brian Hicks, and Jake Lockhart stood back and watched all the forcible entry tests performed at the Knoxville Fire Department Training Academy. Aside from a broken pick at the top, the bar withstood all the intentional abuse.

Your Point of View (POV) defines the RIGHT challenge to address in the following mode in the Design Thinking process, which is the Ideation mode. A good POV will allow you to ideate and solve your design challenge in a goal-oriented manner in which you keep a focus on your users, their needs and your insights about them. Design challenges are sent out daily and can be shared with the #dailyui hashtag. As a bonus, rewards are available to help keep designers on their toes, 100% free.

Liberal Arts requirements in science, global studies, English, critical theory and art history invite students to understand their artistic practice in a larger context. Core curriculum integrates the study of art with other disciplines from the first year, so that students don’t have to complete requirements before getting to their major area. Ansel Adams founded the photography department in 1945, with faculty including Dorothea Lange and Edward Weston. Annie Leibovitz shot for Rolling Stone while still a student at SFAI; other alumni made history by winning the first directorial Oscar awarded to a woman (Kathryn Bigelow) and painting Barack Obama’s official Presidential portrait (Kehinde Wiley). Many campuses here focus on art or are solely arts schools, with liberal arts and science requirements represented in arts-related forms.

Serving approximately 36,000 students, the school offers more than 250 areas of study at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. Programs at SJSU are housed across nine colleges and dozens of departments and schools. San Jose State University is accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). The College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts (PSFA) at San Diego State University (San Diego State or SDSU) houses seven schools, three departments, and 15 interdisciplinary centers and institutes. Serving more than 5,000 students, PFSA provides internship opportunities, international experiences, and public performances and presentations to students in all of its departments and schools. Another excellent Los Angeles arts program, the Roski started offering classes in the late 19th century, making it one of the oldest programs on the list.

California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) houses the School of Art, home to the Graphic Design Program, which provides small critique-based classes taught by industry professionals with years of experience. Leading to a BFA or MFA, the program also provides 24 hour access to communal studios, access to state-of-the-art facilities and labs, and the opportunity to work with faculty mentors throughout the program. CalArts ranks in the top 15 programs nationally for performing arts, film and photography, and for design. Faculty include industry professionals, from animators and film model makers to partners in the gaming industry. An especially strong graphic design program garners a 98% employment rate for graduates.

Your portfolio and some other materials will be reviewed by the Roski admissions team. Candidates for the minors in the Roski School of Art and Design will be counseled by an academic adviser in the school. The two most important things about the Writing Program for me were the mentorship—being pushed by, and being championed by, faculty—both while I was at CalArts and after I graduated.

SCAD is more commercially minded than others on our list, and is well-regarded for its animation and graphic design programs. It’s also always lauded itself for being digitally driven—according to co-founder Paula Wallace, SCAD was the first school to receive shipments of Commodore’s Amiga computers in the 1980s. Alumni include painter José Parlá, Academy Award-winning special effects artist Mir Zafar Ali, and M. Alice LeGrow, the cartoonist behind the successful new gothic graphic novel series, Bizenghast.

Its student body is 10% Asian, 4% Black or African American, 11% Hispanic/Latino, and 35% White. SAIC has a stellar reputation, with alumni including Jeffrey Gibson, Joan Mitchell, Rashid Johnson, Georgia O’Keeffe, Tania Bruguera, Jeff Koons, Sterling Ruby, and art critic Jerry Saltz. Otis is committed to providing scholarship and grant opportunities so students can attain a great education while not going too deep into debt. There are an abundant amount of merit and financial scholarship opportunities, including the prestigious Charles White Scholarship, reflecting Otis’s commitment to supporting aspiring artists. Notable alumni such as David Hammons, Robert Irwin, Kim Gordon, Kerry James Marshall, and Masami Teraoka highlight Otis’s ability to cultivate artistic excellence.
